BMI categories (WHO)
- Below 18.5: underweight
- 18.5 – 24.9: normal
- 25 – 29.9: overweight
- 30 and above: obese
Many health bodies suggest lower cut-offs for South Asian adults (overweight from 23, obese from 25), because health risks rise at lower BMIs. BMI does not account for muscle mass, age or body shape. It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Talk to a doctor about your health.
Frequently asked questions
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not always. Muscular people can have a high BMI without excess fat.
Can children use this?
No. Children need age- and sex-specific BMI percentile charts.
